Partners at NTNU have now developed the first interactive UI prototype of the TWINVEST digital twin platform, designed to support onshore wind investment decisions across the full project lifecycle. This significant milestone integrates contributions from across the consortium into a single, user-friendly interface.
The UI prototype brings together four areas that today typically live in separate tools: planning where to build, simulating how a design will perform, monitoring operating wind farms, and forecasting weather and markets. For users, the value lies in having planning, simulation, operational and forecasting information in one place, rather than navigating separate tools.
Turning technical complexity into an interface non-specialist users can navigate
This UI prototype builds on the platform architecture defined by NTNU earlier in WP2, which uses the FMI standard to combine modular component models, such as gearboxes, generators and pitch/yaw sub-systems, that can be coordinated together in a single simulation. Weather forecasts, market data and sensor inputs from across the consortium are integrated through the platform’s data services. This modular, microservices-based architecture is what makes it possible to bring such diverse contributions together into one user-facing platform. One of the main challenges has been bringing together the very different kinds of work happening across the consortium: physical models, weather and market data, sensor inputs, financial frameworks, into a single, coherent user experience. This is because each contribution has its own discipline, assumptions and data conventions. Turning this technical complexity into an interface non-specialist users can navigate easily required close collaboration among the partners involved in each use case, so that each contribution from technical models to data feeds to the interface itself comes together into one usable experience. This work is ongoing as the back-end integration progresses.
What’s next?
Following the prototype milestone, the partners are now moving into the back-end integration phase. Over the coming months, the focus will be on connecting the front-end to the technical models and data sources developed across the consortium, and on preparing the platform for interoperability testing. The goal is to have a validated, open-source Digital Twin platform ready by the end of 2026.
