On 3-5 June 2026, Dmitrij Mordasov from NTNU presented a conference paper at TORQUE 2026 in Bruges, Belgium. The open access paper, “Digital Twin Framework for Wind Farm Performance Monitoring and Management: A KPI-first Top-down Approach”, was presented in form of a poster. Torque 2026 was a good opportunity to learn about the latest advances in wind energy and meet researchers and industry professionals.
What the paper is about
Say you have a physical wind farm and want to build a Digital Twin of it. Where do you start with connecting the data, so it would be scaleable to turbine, farm, and portfolio level?
Current DT literature in wind energy tends to split in two directions:
- High-level overviews of what the technology can do, or
- Focused component models with SCADA integration that stay siloed and don’t account for system-of-systems integration of the rest of the wind farm.
The comprehensiveness and wide system integration of the TWINVEST Digital Twin requires additional systems engineering and architecting effort, which we develop in this KPI-first, top-down framework for wind farm monitoring and management. KPIs are a language every wind farm stakeholder understands — investors, engineers, and turbine technicians alike, by monitoring the everyday status of the wind farm. This is why we structure the TWINVEST Digital Twin around them.
A top-down view of the as-is state, focusing on the wind farm’s SCADA, event and external data, benchmarked against the expected baseline, coming from either physics-, statistical- or hybrid-based models, allows for a quick overview of the wind farm state, flagging of under-performance and triage that is easy to implement in operator workflows.
This work, grounded in a stakeholder-driven systems engineering process, provides the modular framework and design principles needed as the first step toward creating a universal and open-source Digital Twin like TWINVEST.
